How can anyone answer your question intelligently ? I took my basic training in Oahu back in 1940. At that time Hawaii was known throughout the services as the best of the best. Training was severe, discipline was 100% or not accepted at all.
At the same time the marine units and the navy were also proud of their efficiency. I won't say that the army was better just because it was my service. Everything that could be squeezed out of training of troops was done by all services.
Is the army best in my opinion ? Yes in the job it had to do, no if it tried to do the job of the other services. Each was and is trained to do certain tasks. Each is best at that task.
Would I be tougher or more intelligent had I joined the navy ? No way. Would I have fought harder had I joined the marines, No way. I suppose it's natural for a person to think his group, whatever it is ( not necessarily the service ) is better than any other. But common sense should tell him differently if he's at all intelligent.

I've never been in the service so maybe I can be impartial. In terms of having the "coolest stuff" I would have to go with the navy. I've seen a Nimitz class carrier up close and a Trident submarine in dry dock. Very impressive.
As for the men and women themselves, I've always had a lot of respect for the Marines. They're the first ones into a bad situation. It takes something extra to lead the way for everyone else.

From what you described ("toughest most disciplined and squared away of all"), that would be the Marines.
For me, I wanted good technical training and travel. I picked the Navy. Air Force has better technical training, but my father-in-law joined the Air Force and got stuck in Omaha, so I didn't want that. I got the training I wanted (fixing computer, radars, display consoles) and got to travel (visited several countries in Asia).
