the best way to learn a language is to learn the basics, basic grammar and words and then DIVE IN and SPEAK SPEAK SPEAK!! no other way to make a language stick in your head really!! i speak 6 languages, trust me!!!

You can't start speaking to a native if you have no language to use. I know, for example, I would have trouble marching up to a Chinese person, knowing not a word of Chinese and start speaking to them.

Most world languages have some interactive websites. Start with those for minimum outlay. If you get on with that, there are some software programmes, like Rosetta Stone that help with pronunciation and vocab. Next, look for books working with basic grammar. That is the time for a conversation with a native speaker. The best way though is to look for a class at your local college. It will give you the best overall experience.

The direct method is the best. Start speaking with a native, preferably one who does not know your language.
