hi!i'm italian!!!you can say BUONGIORNO all day long,till the sunset...it can be quite formal but you can also say buongiorno to your friends...in the evening you can say BUONASERA(it's more formal) and when you go to bed you say BUONANOTTE(to everybody)..

Buon Giorno.You can use this expression from morning untill 5 p.m. After you will say "Buona Sera".

"Buongiorno" is the classical and most used. Another version would be "Buondì" (dì=giorno)...anyway if you want to joke a bit you can say "Buon Giorgio" (=George) or "John Borno" that sound similar :)

...but use "Buongiorno" with a smile and you go everywhere.
