No, there have been a number of unfortunate killings of Dogs by Police that thought the dog might be violent.
I have nothing but respect for Police that put themselves between the criminals and the public, but some of them over react to dog.

In some cases in our area they try to wait for animal control. If a dog charges them , they will attempt to put it down humanely it but in cases where the dog is violent police kill it rather than being bit.

An officer will not hesitate due to his training. They are allowed to use deadly force in the protetion of their own or another persons life. If the imminent threat to either exist then BAM, bye bye doggy. A full investigation will still be launched by the department since there was a firearms discharge in the line of duty, but as long as departmental guidelines as well as local, state, and federal laws are abided by, then nothing should come of it.

No they will kill the dog, without hesitation, long before the dog gets close enough to bite them.

If the dog is a threat to someone, they will kill it, if not a threat at that time, they call animal control who will catch or capture the dogs.
There are cases all the time of an officer shooting a dangerous dog. Of course normally on TV they talk about the officer killing someones household pet and talk about about the officer.

In our town, yes, they will hesitate. They will hesitate so much in fact, that they tell the the mobile home court owner that since the vicious dog is on their property they need to take care of the problem. Our police force sucks.

I would assume it depends on the dog and its breed and most of all how it is reacting to the policeperson in question. I would think if the officer felt threatened, they would certainly shoot the animal, no matter what. I don't believe they intentionally set out to kill the animal, so I think every set of circumstances are different.
