Depends of the needs of travel. The hotel should feature facilities you need. Examples of standerd features include (but not limited too):

Basic Cable
Internet Access
Telephone
Pool/Fitness Center
Fax Machines
Breakfast or Resturant on or near Hotel
Parking/Access to transportation

Long Stay rooms may include Kitchenett or Kitchen
Extra Conforts such a Whirlpool Tubs
Room Service offers.

The best advice is to concider what you are going to need or looking for in a stay and match a hotel with those serivces, Each stay and person will have there own needs and opnion of the best hotel.

I think they should have:

1. At least one good restaurant
2. A separate coffee shop
3. Internet access either in the business center or in the room.
4. A room safe
5. Clean bathrooms and good linens and towels.
6. A good controllable AC/Heating system
7. A spa
8. A small shop for incidentals and snacks.
9. Firm beds and extra pillows.
10. A good system for wake up calls.

Not in order of importance but, that is the order it came to mind. LOL

It really depends on what your needs are. What are your interests and reason for travel? If for business, do they offer High Speed Internet and a Business Center for printing documents? If you are traveling for pleasure, do you require a gym, concierge service and proximity to food and entertainment? You need to ask those questions about what you prefer, and than look for amenities that meet your needs.

For my preferences - I look for internet access, proximity to transportation/food/entertainment/shopping, and I also check their AAA rating (and for AAA discounts).
