There are hundreds of different types of nurses just as there are lots of different specialities of doctors. There are nurses on surgical wards, medical wards, orthopaedic wards, intensive care units, renal wards and units, operating theatres, A&E depts. There are GP practice nurses, district nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse consultants, research nurses, rehab. nurses, out-patient nurses, health promotion nurses, nursing home nurses, hospice nurses and many many more. Nurses are professionals who, as part of a team care for patients to promote recovery or make as comfortable as possible where recovery is not acheivable. They make important decisions on the treatment of individuals and it's about time that they were recognised by the Government and the corrupt NHS managers (who haven't a clue what patients need) for their important role!

An interesting question - nurses cover so many roles that it is impossible to state them all, many nurses are independent prescribers, I work as a substance misuse clinical nurse specialist, there are nurses who do endoscopy, minor surgery etcetera, nurses in intensive care, nurses in hospices - in fact almost everywhere including large factories and schools and colleges. What do we all have in common - the art and science of nursing combine to promote the ability of the patient to attain the fullest quality of life permissible and to make a difference to someones day. Caring is not soppy or sentimental, promoting a persons quality of life may call for tough and painful decisions. Nurses have to have very specific knowledge related to their area, but at any time could be called on to produce sheer miracles - like patient transport - "out of a hat like a rabbit", or to know how to perform all the fundamental nursing care for a paraplegic patient who needs their specialist nursing care too. My colleagues amaze me everyday with their wisdom, fortitude and breadth of knowledge.
I hope that I have helped to develop your picture of nurses a little more.
