The next painting I am going to do is going to be a still life. I was thinking about doing a picture of a pregnant woman looking out a window, the shadow from the curtains black out her face. Her arm is laying on her stomache, and she's sitting in a chair which is positioned to the left of the window.

Do you think this would make a nice still life painting?
Do you have any suggestions on what other things I could paint?

I appreciate all your posts guys. Thanks!

I think it sounds like an intriguing idea; although I'd automatically imagine the scene better composed and more reflective if the woman were to be standing, but art is indeed about personal preference and I can be no judge without seeing the painting itself. What is going to be outside the window? To what is she looking? There's a big mystery here and I think it makes an intriguing painting.

If you enjoy painting people in this wistful style, try something in the style of Renoir's Rokeby Venus. The figure is such a wonderful painting opportunity. If you're into still lifes, then have a look at Cezanne's works for technique and colour ideas.

Maybe you could also try some people in situ, in certain locations and events.

Just my two cents.

Paint that which you love the most. For a painting to really, really grab us and move us, it must first do that for you. If you feel very strongly about what you are seeing and unfolding on your canvas, that will come out and reach us.

Pull your heart and soul out and put it there for all to see. Your skill to be honest, and open, will carry you.

That becomes stronger with practice, and will grow into something larger than yourself.

People who view such art engage in a search within themselves. Why is it difficult to do? Because you make your heart and soul vulnerable to criticism by those who live in some other space. Our fragile selves struggle with that possibility. But, only if you do so open, can your soul grow and transcend the everyday struggles of this life.- and perhaps take others with you.

Enjoy! and the best of luck to you.

A still life is a portrayal of inanimate objects. What you're describing is commonly called a figurative painting or a figure painting.

don't ask what other people think of your ideas, when it comes to art there are no correct answers to give, tho people will always say other wise. to develop as an artist, its not just about technique its a lot about self discipline and having the determination to go against the grain of public opinion. if YOU want to do it then its always a good idea. Good luck and listen to that inner voice.

Sounds like a nice image, but it's not a still life if it has a living being in it. It requires only inanimate objects to qualify as a 'still life'.

it's an interesting idea. Why not give it a shot. It reminds me somewhat of a painting by Vermeer, A Wman Reading a Letter.

Enjoy your painting!

Three aspects need to be focused upon
a] what is ur skill level
b] how do u treat your medium (i-e oil, water, pastels)
c[ what do u intend to do it with afterwards

To be honest it sounds kind of depressing. Why hide her face?Maybe she can look out into the distance through the window. ...wistfully or gladly or even if you must, sadly.
