Would you stay in a relationship that had a foundation in violence and cruelty? Dogs, like people, tire of being dominated in this manner and will terminate bad relationships by becoming the aggressor and or running away and taking their chances in the wild.
Having rules and being consistent is a much better way to have a well behaved dog. Also teaching your dog what pleases you (good behavior) is another key. I have used the clicker method to work with my own dog and a rescue that we fostered. The foster was so excited to finally understand what got my love and attention that he would go out of his way to do things he knew would please me. He caught on that the click meant he did something that pleased me and he would get a food reward for it. At the same time, many bad behaviors disappeared because he didn't get the click, food or my attention for those; and he wanted attention and food.
Like kids they want attention, even if it is negative. If they can't figure out how to get your positive attention they will get it through any means possible.
Remember, you are creating a relationship with this animal. Why not put the effort into creating a relation that you will cherrish for the rest of your life!

You need the taming. You will only create a fearful dog not a companion.

If you feel the need to abuse your dog to get it trained, you shouldn't have one. Training takes love, encouragement, compassion & patience. If you don't posess those qualities, give the dog to someone who does.

How about love and compassion? But only if you want a real friend.

"Tame" to me means socialize, so I'll say desensitization and counter-conditioning.

Animal abuse is illegal, even if you have no conscience about it.
