Start with your own Birth Certificate. That lists your parents birth dates and locations. Then get their birth certificates.
Simultaneously, while waiting for paperwork to arrive, start interviewing all your living relatives. Ask if they have old relatives information, books, deeds, certificates, pictures. There are interview techniques that you can use, but generally you are looking for information that leads to the next people, and ties one person to another. Wills, deeds, probate, marriage, death, obits, etc.
Then after you begin to assemble this information, start a family tree. Most people use software today. Here are some programs, and comparisons. Below.
After that, you begin to research using web sites - tons of information is available now.
