Diatomic molecules of Nitrogen and Oxygen, the two gases that make up the majority of our atmosphere, diffuse or spread out the wavelength of blue light to a greater extent than other colors. Other planets and natural satellites have atmospheres of different compositions and their skies would appear different. Mars, according to pictures sent back by the Rover, has a pink sky. The Earth's moon, which has virtually no atmosphere has no color to its sky. Except for the stars both the day and the night sky are completely black as seen from the moon. Daytime on the moon would not look like our night time however. Even though the sky was dark and stars could be seen all day, during the daytime the surface of the moon would be brightly illuminated.

Because gas molecules scatter blue light better than red light. So the blue light gets bounced between gas molecule after gas molecule, like balls in a pinball machine, until you can't tell where it comes from any more. It seems to come from everywhere in the sky, but it all really came from the Sun. At the same time, red light just passes through without scattering much at all. That is why the Sun looks red at sunset. Even at noon it is slightly redder that it would be if there were no air, but near the horizon light from the Sun has many times more air to pass through before reaching your eyes, so it looks very red then.

Because of the sun, it lights up the sky. But the sky is not always blue it can turn grey or sometimes even look black. depending on the weather.
