the shiite muslimsbelieve that the leader of the faith have been ordained by allah and decendent from the prophet mohhamed-it is like our monarchy.

the sunni orthodox muslims believe that the leader is irrelevent to his birth-and this is where the two groups anger originates from.

it all stems from the medieval times, and within the crusades the sunni and fatimid muslims would rather side with the westerners than unite, due to this dissagreement and border disputes.

This is a good question, and quite respectful, which I don't see very often when people here are referring to the Muslim religion.

As others mentioned before, similar destructive attitudes occurred between the Protestants and Catholics. I don't think it can be explained logically. It isn't logical at all. They're supposed to have the same God.

I guess it really has to do with the attitudes of the people in the particular place, because I've seen different sects of Muslims living together quite nicely in other countries in other parts of the world.

It's a shame people develop these attitudes of intolerance. I've seen different cultures getting along, so I know it can happen. I wish one day everyone can be accepting - or at least the majority can learn to ignore the rantings of the intolerant fundamentalists.

It has to do with the Caliphate and the rightful successor to lead the Muslim community. The Shi'a Believe that the successors should be descendent of Muhammed (pbuh) and the Sunni say that that is not needed. The Shi'a see the descendents of The Prophet as having a special gift that is part of the revelation recieved. The Sunni disagree. It lead to great battles between the Calipahte (leaders of the Muslim Community) and the Shi'at Ali.

Muslims should not hate each other but love one another, if there is something a sunni disagree's with the a shia he she should eaither allow it or keep quite and walk away. Allah has said in the Quran "United you are stronger" when world war 3 comes all the Muslims will unite in battle as one religion which is Islam.

they have their differences since the death of the Prophet (pbuh).

but what you see now is a civil war between two groups who feel that each of them is the right one to rule Iraq.

they are both stupid and fell for the American trap.
the US Army started all this when they made Alliance with the Mahdi Army (Shiite) in Baghdad.

the Sunnis considered them traitors and therefore justified killing them all.

the situation in Iraq is an unfortunate mess.
thanks Mr Ramsfeld.

Just as the conflict in Northern Ireland was only partly about religion so is the conflict in Iraq. Shiites are the minority of Muslims worlwide but in the majority in Iraq, however Saddam was Sunni and promoted his family and ethnic Sunnis while he was in power, the majority in Iraq (but still the minority overall) are now taking their revenge...

Hate is such a harsh word, they don't hate each other, there's just a big difference in terms of what they believe which is why there is a big division. But you are right there is no winner bcos islam's all about unity and not division.

I'm not muslim, but I can lead you to the right answer which is... there is no right answer. There's thousands of years of history there and they have fought during all of it, one thinking they are superior than the other. It's really a sad thing, but it has never changed and doubt it will ever change. Bottom line is, unless you were born and raised in that area of the world, you will never fully understand, sometimes I doubt they do.

Just like protestants and catholics had so much bitterness between them in the past (and in some areas, to the present time). Religion gets mingled with dogma and stubborness.

sunni and Shiia lived with each other for years, you will never see this hate anywhere except in Iraq, and God knows who is behind this killing. during war, it's good to divide people than to let them unite against you.
