I had a run in with a deer - on Halloween no less! - and I'm waiting for the Insurance inspection. But it was low speed ~ 30 mph. So, the car still runs but needs some body work. I'm not sure if I should keep it or just get the money for it. Any comments from someone with some experience or insight would be appreciated!

I had a head on collision in a Dodge Dakota and the insurance company totalled my truck. I purchased the salvage rights for $1500 and thought I could get more than that for a motor and transmission on a 91000 mile vehicle.

I stored the truck for about a year and ran across on the same color that had been wrecked in the back. I purchased it for $900!!! Then I paid another $900 to put mine back together with all new(er) body parts.

Bottom line. I paid about $2800 for a $13000 truck and I still drive it today!

Keep your eyes open!

Wait until the insurance adjuster makes his/her inspection. The adjuster will determine the value of the vehicle versus the damage. If it turns out the vehicle is "totaled" but you can still drive it, if that is what you want to do, dont take the money for the damage, if you do, then the car belongs to the insurance company. If you do take the money, assuming it is totaled, the insurance may let you buy it back from them, usually with about 3/4 of the money paid to you for the damage, its a win win situation for the insurance company. If you continue to drive it and it is considered totaled, you wont be able to get any coverage such as colision or comprehensive. You would be better off making a decision after the adjuster has made a inspection. As far as low speed, well, the way cars are made now, it doesnt take much impact to run up a $5000+ repair bill.

If you shop around an autobody shop may do the work for less than they would if it were an insurance claim. Before you can drive the car it will have to be safetied if it is a write off. If you are able or if someone you know is the fenders and lights etc can be purchased from an autowrecker, painted and replaced quite cheaply if there is no damage to the body structure.

you need to have lights that are aimable ,signals that work and no sharp edges or pieces falling off,the hood needs to latch properly.talk to a local body shop about the min they could do to make it safe then decide after the insurance company gives you option, they may write it off then it will need to be properly repaired to be put back on road

Depends on your financial situation. If you are able to use the money and purchase a new car, you might be better off.

If you cannot afford a new car right now and the old one still runs, you might want to keep it.
