Wanting more for the other person than you do for yourself (while still loving yourself of course). A feeling inside when the person (my child) smiles and it feels so wonderful. Knowing that if something happened to them your heart would break. Being kind and measuring your words trying always to help and not hurt. Being strong enough to do what is right instead of what you want. Appreciation, affection, compassion. and understanding. Acknowledging their soul, who they are, not who you want them to be or what you need from them.

Babitha is right. Romantic love is ultimately still love for oneself. How the other person makes you feel is romantic love. Love that makes you willing to forgo everything that ever mattered to you for the sake of another's happiness is where you find depth.
