I don't believe if you have a felony conviction that you can own any firearms regardless of the state. However, I do think that you can petition to have your rights returned to you as your felony conviction is so old. After doing some research however, I have not found anything that says that the right to own a firearm is one of the rights you can have restored. Check with your local law enforcement.

Don't know specifics on Michigan law, but most states the law is Possession of a firearm by certain persons is prohibited. Persons convicted of felonies caught in violation constitutes another felony (classification dependent upon variables in previous felony conviction). Persons convicted of misdemeanor domestic battery constitutes a Class A misdemeanor. Best advice, don't buy or possess a firearm until you've talked to your local law enforcement, or court clerk. As a previous reply said you may want to look into bow hunting.

This may vary by state, and to know for sure what the law is in your state, you should ask your state Attorney General's Office. But here's the federal law, as of the 1990s (when I had an FFL; I think it's still the same). You can restore your right to acquire a firearm in two ways: 1) Apply to the court in the jurisdiction where you were convicted to reinstate your civil rights. If you've gone for a long time without any convictions, it should be pretty much automatic. 2) Apply to the BATF for what they call "relief from disabilities." Likewise, if you've had no problems with the law in some time, you should receive it.

Bound's hubby here:

Sorry, but Federal Law prohibits a convicted felon from owning a firearm, period! A felony conviction is an automatic disqualifier for firearms ownership in the US.

My advice is to either purchase a bow or a camera!

Owning and possessing a firearm and going hunting with one are two different things entirely.

Check with your local CLEOs office....that Cheif Law Enforcement Officer. Even if you are prohibited from owning a firearm, you may still be allowed to use a friends in the field.

The charge you are talking about is calle dweapons under disability. Depending on the charge, you might be able to get it expunged. Check into it. If not, then find out if you can bow hunt. Longer season and it is fun also.

Most felonies only prevent you from owning a gun for 7 years. However, DV, armed robbery and a handful of others make it perminent. You would need to seek legal advice on the specific crime.
