I am just shocked how many people do not grasp the concept of passports. You are, and always have been, required to have a passport for virtually ALL travel outside your own country. Certain countries have had reciprocal arrangements regarding laxity on this regulation. In regard to the USA, this would be Mexico, Canada, and certain areas of Bermuda & the Carribean. If you go to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, etc, you have always been required to have a passport.

The most current changes to travel regulations are:
* As of 1/7/2007, you will need a passport to travel BY AIR to those countries from the US that only required a license before, i.e. Mexico, Canada, and some islands. You may still go by Land or Boat without a passport but I personally would still recommend one.
* As of 1/7/2009, you will need a passport to travel by all methods to all countries.

It is not difficult to get a passport and they are good for at least 10-years. Just go to a local post office or city clerk's office with about $130, some passport photos (those small head shots), and your birth certificate.

Starting this January, you will need a passport to travel to Mexico and Canada, travel that used to only require a photo ID.

In January of 2008, ANY travel outside of the USA will require a passport.
