Don't get me wrong. I know that competition can be a good thing in some areas (e.g. business, politics, etc.). However, there are also some people who are extremely competitive in their personal lives, and I can't help but think that this is unhealthy. Why are they so competitive in EVERY area of their lives?

I think it's because they can't feel good about themselves unless they're beating somebody at something. Somehow they've got it into their heads that in order to be considered "the best" at something you must be better than others around you. There is no such thing as just doing your best and being satisfied with that. It has to be compared to somebody else's performance, usually a peer, in order for it to mean something to really competitive people.

In the US our society has really fostered this in business and personal dealings. Competition is glorified on tv. Look at the reality shows - Survivor, Dancing with the Stars, The Amazing Race, Hell's Kitchen - just to name a few.

I know what you mean, but dont have a reason why. I have NEVER EVER been competitive... Im just not into it that much. I was in sales for 7 years and NEVER felt competitive. I was just good and honest at what I did, and therefor I did well. But I know some people who were SO COMPETITIVE up to the point of lying and cheating customers to get sales. It was ridiculous... Some people will do anything to win. I have NO IDEA why... but I wish there was a cure for it.

They got their hormones raged and now they can't simply stop.
They tend to think life is a competition. This people also has less humour and are always serious and most likely selfish.

Business competitiveness has some side effects. This is one of them.

They need to enjoy more... I mean not just watching movies. They need something other than the job to make them realise that their is more to life. I took one of my SERIOUS friend the car with me and went illegal drag racing. He seemed to be broken out of that competitive shell of his.

They are sacrificing their lives on the alter of mass consumption for the benefit of the people who benefit most from mass production. They have been 'educated' to believe that this makes them good and that they have to fight (further compete) against any other competing philosophies, ideologies or political systems that don't wholeheartedly endorse the prevailing race to consume the planet first ethos.

It is a mind-set that, like anything else, can be unlearned. But from personal experience let me tell you---it takes time, sometimes years.
