Many Americans never seem to master English....much less a foreign language. Sorry, I've been wanting to say that for awhile.
Most of us learn a foreign language for many reasons. Those of us who speak a second, and even third, language.
Some of us will take it for fun, or because our friends are taking the class. But, it's also a requirement to get into many colleges and universities, to have taken at least a year of a foreign language in high school (secondary school).
Others know that we have a global economy now, and a secondary language would help us in business.
And then, yes, there are those here who don't see any point in learning another language. Usually the same ones who can't seem to speak English. Sorry, again. I just can't seem to resist.
And your English is fine.

I did study German many years ago for fun and because I planned on travelling to germany and austria. Both beautiful and interesting countries

A couple of years ago I student Italian just for fun because I love the sound of the language and I love almost everything about Italy.

I studied Spanish in college because a language was a requirement, but it sure has come in hand with all the immigration from Mexico.

Great question

I'm sure some do. Just like in any Western country. I'm French and learnt English because I wanted to be a teacher. But I'm planning on learning Spanish soon, and probably another language (Japanese, probably) just because it interests me. So, it's the same thing all over the world. The interesting thing would be to know statistics about that in different countries.

Yes, but certainly not everyone! I take Chinese for school credits, but I also spend a lot of my spare time learning more. I'm also working on learning Latin (just for the fun of it!), but I think I'll need to work harder at it than I am now!

However, most people don't learn a language just for the fun of it, because they're either not good at it, or it just doesn't interest them.

NO, THEY DON'T. They don't learn other languages. Period.
Telling them to learn another language is an insult . They say that everybody MUST learn english. Schreckliche.
Sorry for my German, I am rusty
