DNA comparison by electrophoresis. I've seen kits available in school divisions for science classes. On a similar note: paper chromatography to check if the composition of ink between samples are same or different.

Obviously the first response knows what's goingon in crime scene investigations in general (not just the show). What about forensics entomology, the study fo bug larvae (magots) on bodies to date the aproximate time of death (usually within a few hours). Did a project on that and had my data input into the database for the area I lived in at the time. Was a cool experience.

Common forensic analyses performed:
Gross microscopy of hair and sperm samples
Gas chromatography and spectral analyses of paint chips, chemical residues, etc.
DNA analysis of body fluids.
Fingerprint dusting of surfaces, and 'lifting' of said fingerprints for entry into the fingerprint database (AFIS)
Blood stain splatter analysis, to determine the direction and force of impact.
Blood stain typing and analysis to determine whether it is human in origin.
