I wanted to ask whether a LCD or Plasma TV can be used as a computer monitor for a desktop PC or a laptop and switichg between computer and tv modes at a flick of a switch and button. What do I need to look out for when purchasing the above and any accessories would I need?

Please help me with suitable sources and comments. Many thanks

LCD has a much longer screen life, something like 100,000 hours compared to 3-5,000 hours for a plasma screen. Lower electrcity consumption too. Go for LCD.

They both can, but don't use a plasma for a monitor as you'll get screen burn (you have been warned!). Plasmas have fantastic picture quality over LCD's for moving TV & video pictures but, for things like computer images and stationary things, LCDS are far superior. Go for an LCD and make sure its HD compatible so that the resolution it can display will be high enough for you to use your PC on. Make sure there is a DVI input or a RGB input that can connect directly to your graphics card. Most new LCD's have both of these, but check just in case.

I have a Samsung Syncmaster LCD TV Monitor.

It came with all the plugs and software needed to connect it to my PC.

It has remote control so I press the source button to switch between TV, PC, Games Console etc.

Mine was a gift and everything I needed came with it. The only thing we bought was an aerial as the TV reception was not great and I do not have it connected to my SKY so only get terrestirial channels.

If in doubt make sure you have your PC specifications with you and go to a reputable seller. They should be able to advise you on what is compatible and what extra's you may need.

Hi. I've got a 42" LCD TV. I have mine wall mounted (brackets brought from ebay as very expensive from the shops).
I looked into the difference between LCD and plasma. It seems that the only difference is that plasma screens have a shelf life of between 4-5 years, LCD's don't.
Curry's Superstore do LCD flatscreens that can be used as TV's or PC's. they cost from £70 upwards dependant of size of course.
I did a google search and put in LCD vs Plasma and read the gumph. Helped me a lot.
Get one - you won't ever look back. :-)

LCDs can get screen burn, too. I heard that DLPs are the best way to go.

LCD type displays exhibit this same phenomenon, although the mechanics of the image retention are different. In the case of LCD displays, the liquid crystal molecules which convert the white backlight to color as it passes through the membrane lose their rotation elasticity. In this case they are unable to fully return to their normal rotation state. As in the case with plasma displays, this is usually transient and will self correct after a period of off time or dynamic content. However, in severe cases it can become permanent.
