in colder weather notice a space of about 1/4" between some of the slats - where you can see wood underneath. seems to close up in warmer weather. what can be done to alleviate this opening to protect the wood underneath? don't want to remove siding if not needed.

was wondering if it would ok to pull siding together, to get a little overlap, and use some small nails to keep in place -- would this okay to do??

My house has the same thing...we found a metal spacer that fitthe gap and painted it to matche the color of the siding.

ihave installed siding on several hundred houses. I have never seen the siding "shrink" this much. It is either very cheap material or it was not installed properly. Usually the siding is overlapped at least 2 inches. It sounds like the siding installed on your home is not overlapped at all. The only way to correct the problem is to tear off the siding and install it properly. You may also need extra siding to correct the problem properly. Good luck in matching the color.

Call a professional. Even if you follow the guidance here, you could really mess things up. It's well worth a professional's $$. Also, check if it's under warranty, you may be able to get it fixed for free by a professional. Good luck.
