You can usually get an idea of the car by the owner. What does the house and yard look like? What does the other vehicle look like? Ask to see maintenance records. Ask when the tranny fluid was changed last or the fuel filter. Is it spotless outside and inside? If they don't take time to clean it, they usually don't take time to maintain it. If it's dirty, move on. Check the oil. Dirty? Check and smell the tranny fluid. Smell burnt? Move on.
Don't get all hyped about a very low mileage car. These are usually driven short distances at a time, which is bad for the tranny and exhaust. The more you look, the more you'll be able to read the seller. If you have a mechanic you like, ask him about a customer selling their car. Good luck.

You have to buy it direct from the dealer to get a good one, it needs to be certified. If it's not a certified used car, you may get a car that breaks down alot and has serious problems. Even when certified you want to find one with at least a 1 year warranty or 10,000 mile warranty. Just in case there are any potential problems with the car they will show themselves in that time frame, and the warranty will cover it. Good luck!

While there are the horror stories of (It was my grandmas car and she only used it to go to the store) they are out there. You have to increase your search area (you may have to travel a couple hours to find it) so look in the neighboring counties as well. What you are looking for is the house wife whose hubby traded her car in for a new one (for its age alone). It will be a luxury type car, have low miles & LOOK LIKE IT WAS GARAGE KEPT! That is the key, if they have to sell you on it, then keep looking. Riding motorcycles a lot (and getting cars for the winters) I have found many cars that blow peoples minds. It will look BRAND NEW, in the engine, trunk, inside & outside. It will start right up & run like new. Then you will know the low miles are for real. Then you play hard ball & get them to knock $1,000 plus of the price & you have a car with under 50,000 miles that will last for many worry free years. DO NOT buy any warrenty for it cuz they are a rip off.
