I'm afraid this is an old piece of fiction which has got immortalized as a "Hindu" thing. In fact, the Hindus don't have any such thing in their Scriptures, nor are they even aware of this myth being ascribed to them.
It's about as true as the Hindu ascetic sleeping on a bed of nails and charming snakes and all that.
These are all about as true as Vlad the Impaler being elevated from an obscure Transylvanian Count to the legendary Dracula, which was a Fiction!
They all make for good Tourist attractions, for people who believe that kind of stuff.
They do preach Harmony with Nature, and if you find that "Stupid", I don't know what one should rate you at.
Because you very "intelligently" quoted the most archaic piece of fiction and calmly associated it with a truth.
Next, you'll probably be saying that in the movie "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" they show the "Hindus", who are actually vegetarians, eating snakes and "monkeys brains" ... so, how much more barbaric can they get?
Do try to stay in the shade, because the sun seems to be getting at those few brain cells you have.

which hindus were you talking to that said that? I've never heard that expression before and i know a lot of hindus.
