Friends of my husband and I have invited us for a weekend stay at their house. We have never been to their house, but would like to take something along to give them as a token of our gratitude. Any ideas? We are leaving Friday so please help!!

I thought of wine too, but neither of them drink so I don't think this would be very appropriate.

We will be taking them out to eat our first night, but we wanted to leave them with something that they can enjoy.

It depends on what they like to do, if they are movie people maybe a new release movie and some popcorn to share after you leave. If they are into cooking a new cooking gadget or a new cookbook. If they are sports fans maybe some tickets to a game. You could always play it safe and give them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. Also, maybe you should go to their home, spend the weekend getting to know what their interests are and what their home is like and then send the gift when you return . That way it is even more unexpected and a way to get back in touch after the weekend is over and you have a chance to see what their interests are and how their home is decorated. You could always get something like a throw for "that beautiful chair in your den, I saw it and thought of you and how warm and inviting you are. That kind of thing. It will make it a lot more personal that way.

The token of gratitude does not necessarily need to be returned overnight as well. You may invite them over to your place for a nice dinner next time. A home visit for a home visit.

I love the gift basket idea, given upon entry to the house. Then during the course of the weekend pick up some flowers or wine goblets for ice cream sundaes.

Something consumable like flowers, chocolate, food, wine. Wine is probably the best thing to take because if they happen to not like it, they can always pass it on to someone else. They will see you've shown your gratitude.

Look around their house and see what they actually use and enjoy. If they like magazines, send them a subscription. If they snack on fruit, send them a fruit basket. Go shopping and "just happen" to see several of their favorite toiletries "on sale" and get them. Or give them a gift card for gasoline, groceries.

A gift basket from Harry and David's or Omaha Steaks if they eat red meat. Have the basket arrive the day after you leave as your "thank you for having us"

A moderately priced bottle of wine..
the good thing about wine is, even if you only spent $20 on it, no one really knows if it cost you $10 or $100...

You could take a basket of fruit - or a gift certificate from their favorite store - or how about taking them out to eat at their favorite restaurant and paying for them also!@

Having not been to their home prior, you could look around their home and see the color schemes, type of furniture, fixtures, etc... and then upon your return home, send them something that they would truly enjoy...it will let your hosts know that you truly went out of your way to find a gift that they will love for years to come
Peace
