Whene your navel heals after birth (you know, the place where the umbilical cord attached to you?) the knot in the cord either recesses or sticks out....hence the terms "innie" and "outtie". Most people's seem to recess, but some stick out.

The belly button either is pushed in and makes a crater in your belly, or it is pushed out and pokes out like a nipple from your belly.
