I have that. I have a bilateral double click with pain and causes my jaw to open 70% more than the average person's jaw. I was given a splint, told not to chew gum, grit my teeth and to eat softer foods.
It hasn't helped and there isn't anything that can be done for me, as surgery is not an option with my other health problems. I saw a specailist and it apparantly does work, just not with me.

YES. You first need a splint to adjust the jaw, then they will see if you need braces to align the teeth again. Forget the surgery and all the other major invasive methods that don't work but put money in doctors pockets.
Also, don't do things that aggrivate the jaw once you fix it; grit teeth, chew hard things, yawn too wide, chew gum, etc.

Go to your local supermarket (Wal-Mart, K-Mart etc) and in the sporting goods section, pick yourself up a mouth guard. When you get it home, you will have to boil it for several minutes to soften it before you can form it to your mouth. Once it is formed to your mouth, wear it at night when you are sleeping. It will take some time to get used to, but at least you wont have to have your jaws wired shut for weeks on end, and carry around those cute little pliers in case you need to vomit, plus its a lot cheaper than getting the mouth guard from your dentist, and works just as well.
