Agh Karen its so sad but dogs are so so sensitive. I had two lovely boxer dogs and one died about 3 years ago the other one the white female almost died on me from her loss she had a broken heart. We all use to walk around 2 large fields every day together but after the death of the male the lady refused to walk this again after that and never did from that day. I just took her with me everywhere from that on I never left her with anyone and cared for her like a baby she had to be spoon fed to get her to eat. It took her about 1 year to come around. She never forgot him however she sadly died with a tumour last year I had to put her to sleep just after Christmas 2005 it broke my heart. I never replaced my dogs it is to hard to let them go in the end they are just like a friend companion and individual and not replaceable.
Kindness love encouragement and sometime spoon feeding would be necessary to get a dog over his/her companions loss just care for the 8 year old terrrier as best as you can he will be the master of the house.

Sorry about your lost.I would not get another puppy or dog for now.Your dog is mourning the lost of the other dog and at age 8 I dont think he will really tolerate a puppy jumping all over him. You need to take extra time out with the dog.Maybe in a few months you can introduce a dog into your home but for now I would not do it.

First, I am so sorry for the loss of your Lab ... 17 years is a long time; I'm sure you are hurting very much.
As to your question, I think the following sites might be helpful. The first is an article that addresses the grieving process your dog is going through and offers suggestions on how to help. The second site also addresses the grieving process and offers a natural, holistic supplement that might help.

Again, my sincere condolences to your and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss...:( As the others have said, lots of attention and cuddles and you may even want to try some holistic remedies such as Rescue Remedy (Bach flowers)
You can find it at most health food stores and even in some pharmacies.
You might also want to get some extra long walks in. Sometimes extra physical activity helps.
Good luck and again, my sincerest condolences on your loss.

There's not too much you can do. She's mourning for her family member. all you can do is comfort her and introduce her to other dogs in the park etc. I wouldn't recommend getting another dog until you see how she reacts to other dogs. she could be a little unpredictable due to her loss.

Maybe time for a new pup. Your terrier will be happier with a new friend.
