The explanations at
http://www.suite101.com/lesson.cfm/18770...
show the issue. I am not able answer someone who explained: "Raama could have negotiated with Vaali and Sugriva for a compromise. But then, for mere compromise, he would not have gotten the help he needed to retrieve Sita. Thats why he wanted to bind Sugriva in an enormous obligation and so killed Vaali. Since he knew Vaali was stronger, Raama even resorted to a cowardly act."

Do you know that even inside the Hindus, Some great men( like Tagore) Critised Rama's works.
According to him, Ravana signifies the agricultural civilization ie. the Dravid civilization & Raama is a sign of the industrial civilization ie, the Aryan civilization. The entrance of Aryan civilization in India arcertained the end of Dravid civilization just like Raama killed Ravana.
According to them Raama has done many works which is undoubtedly selfish or cowardly.

Pls note that all repeated requests and negotiations from Sugriva had failed with Vaali, because Vaali was corrupted with Power and had in the meanest way acted with Sugriva(his brother)
I agree that killing someone may not be Good but to laydown some one bad (a corrupt high headed king like Vaali) to protect the interest of the Good is always the Hero's role.
You Never have a wrong way to do a right thing(To protect Virtues and the Righteouness)
In Gods Design every body is assigned to do a job and the Vanar sena was destined to be so.

My dear friend, I shall tell u the reality. Vaali had obtained a divine boon that anybody who would come to fight with him would lose half his/her strength to Vaali. However, that did not mean that a powerful Maha-ratha having knowledge of irresistible weapons like NARAYANA ASTRA, VAISHNAVA ASTRA, AMOGHA SHAKTI and BRAHMADANDA would lose his knowledge to Vali if he would come to fight with the latter. If instead of Raama, Sugreeva would have approached either Karna, Drona or Ashwattama, then either of these 3 would have easily killed Vaali in a face-to-face encounter courtesy any of the 4 divine weapons mentioned above. It required just 1 irresistible weapon to kill Vaali & make him fatally wounded. Unfortunately, neither Karna, Drona or Ashwattama were born during the Ramayana period, so there was no proper MAHA-RATHA during that time to kill VAALI. As regards the calibre of Lord Rama, well, he could not build a bridge of arrows over the sea to cross Lanka, while Arjuna built a bridge of arrows over this same water body and with the blessings of Lord Krishna, this arrows bridge could carry even the weight of a gigantic Hanuman.
So, the conclusion is Raama was not very familiar with the knowledge of the irresistible divine weapons. That's why he had to kill Vaali from hiding behind a tree. If u don't believe me, lemme quote u a statement said by Lord Krishna in the MAHABHARATA, "Even with my Sudarshan Chakra, I cannot equal Karna who is armed with the AMOGHA SHAKTI ( the power to use lightning to kill the enemy)."

MODIFIED.I know that I should not hurt you . But I AM hurt very much by THIS ABUSE OF the One Whom I worship because of His great qualities.
.HE will realise only when HIS elder brother is enjoying HIS wife that too when HE IS alive and THAT ELDER BROTHER goes on beating HIM black and white following HIM when HE IS running and when HE din't find any person to protect HIM and ANY place to hide HIMSELF that too for several years. No food and no wife for many years. Then if some strong person comes and kills that cruel animal, HE HAS TO THANK HIM and SHOULD NOT SAY HE DIN'T ACT PROPERLY.
According to THEIR CODE OF CONDUCT (Manu Dharma saastra) younger brother's wife is equal to daughter and if any person rapes her, for him the punishment is death sentence.
ACTUALLY VAALI REPRESENTS THOSE IN POWER WHO WERE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AGE OLD PLIGHT OF TRIBALS AND WOMEN.HE MADE HIS OWN BROTHER A TRIBAL AND HIS BROTHER'S WIFE AN OBJECT OF ENJOYMENT. WHEN KING IS LIKE THAT THEN HIS PEOPLE WILL ALSO BE LIKE HIM. ACTUALLY RAAMA SAVED THEM. SO VAALMEEKI, A TRIBAL, REALISED THIS TRUTH AND SANG RAAMAA'S BIOGRAPHY WITH 24000 SLOKAAS !!!
Vaali is a monkey and cruel animal and so he can be killed from any side. No one can win Vaali by facing him because of the garland in his neck which was given to him by his father Indra and so Sugreeva could not stand before him. Imagine his agony. Who has to protect him? The King or his representative (like Police officer ). Raama as the representative of the king executed it. Even the Vaali admitted that Raama is correct. If you had read Vaalmeeki Raamaayana carefully you would have ANSWERED HIM WHO ABUSED our God.

Vaali was granted a boon by the LORD that he will gain half lthe strength of his opponent while facing him directly but he deviated from the path of dharma-righteousness-by coveting another"s wife by dubious means where- as the God incarnate Sri Rama had to eradicate evil acts of one to protect the others, the eradication of evils for a better cause does not constitute or considered to be unjustice HE is not selfish.

vali was punished for his act of usurping sugreevas wife and forcing her to live with him. Sugreeva had a grievance against vali that he had unjustly punished him. Rama as the emperor had to give justice. There was nothing to negotiate. In todays world people negotiate every thing including wife those times were different

May be, u r right.
but He has too many virtues,
& one should respect others' virtues,
forgetting his vices.
what He & his life style teaches is
more respective than to find his faults.
