last night my wife and i canned several jars of grape juice that was juiced in a steam juicer....it came right out of the steam juicer into the bottle and the lid was put on immediatly .....we put it in a warm bottle with a warm lid and it seems that the lid is sealed pretty tight....i can't open it with bare fingers.....but we never heard the poping noise that we had heard about.....is there a way to tell if it worked so we don't end up getting sick off of this juice in the future....we don't want to keep it all in the fridge if we don't have to.

when you push on the lid does it move up and down or is it solid.

My grandparents were huge canners and they always told me you can't tell until the day you go to use it.

When you open it, that is when you will hear the "pop". Also, when opening the juice, check the lid/seals and liquid itself for cloudiness or mold growth.

I'm not sure about keeping it in the fridge, but if you have a cool basement, that would be great too. Since this is your first time, maybe you can keep 1/2 in the fridge and 1/2 somewhere else, then alternate which ones you open.

Canning is an art form, not a science. Good luck in your new endeavor!

She's right, push on the middle of the lid and see if it goes up and down a bit. If it does, it didn't seal.
You can also make popsicles with the juice or grape ice cubes to float in other drinks so you con't have to use up all the grape juice before it spoils.

There are different ways to can, but if the method has worked you have got a seal. It is sealed tight. If it is not sealed you can lift that lid.

If the seal produces a vacuum, then the canning worked.
