YOu could use a small coffee pot to heat water instead of coffee. THe soups would have to be the kind that you just add water, but you could also make tea, coffee, hot chocolate or soup.

I would not trust a candle burner anywhere but at home.

I've been doing this for years, when I travel. I use a corningware glass cup that has a rubber lid with a small hole in the top (fits a can of pasta or soup)> I got the cup at walmart (in the microwave section) for $10.
Wrap a hand towel around the cup while its on the coffee warmer. It will be piping hot in about 1.5-2 hours. Great way to save money while on the road, rather than eating out everyday.
