Hi Ruth,
The beauty industry is like any other: the 80/20 rule applies. Meaning that 20% of the people possess 80% of the business. If you apply yourself, work hard, have a passion for the industry and work to educate yourself..........you will prosper! The average hairstylist in this country makes about $27,000 but those of us who categorize themselves as one of the 20%'ers make 3,4, or 5+ times that amount of money. I have been in the industry for 16 years and actually got into it because I was 25 years old, going no where and it was a fairly quick schooling. Not ever in my WILDEST dreams did I imagine that I would love it so much or ever make so much money! I went to college directly after high school to become a nurse. I didn't think it was the vocation for me and now I have a job that I love and I make more money than I would if I were the charge nurse at any hospital. I make more money in the beauty industry than many doctors in this country as well. So I guess what I am saying is that if you approach it properly and truly love the industry the money making possibilities are UNLIMITED!

It depends on where you live. Hair stylists in large cities usually make more than ones in a small town. I live in a small town and I have done hair for ten years now. I make really good money cutting hair but after paying your own taxes, social security, and health insurance. I didn't have as much money as I wanted.

I got a job at our local natural gas utility company and work there full time now. I have extra taken out of that check to help pay for the taxes and other stuff like that and the company that I work for pays for your health insurance. I also have a retirement there.

I cut hair part time in my own shop. I really enjoy doing it part time more than I did full time. I think I was beginning to burn out and working the other job makes me appreciate cutting hair more.

After I get off at the Gas Company, I go straight and start cutting hair. I usually have clients waiting on me. I usually work two or three hours each day on Monday through Friday and all day on Saturday and I can make anywhere from thirty dollars to one hundred dollars depending on what and how much I do.

I charge ten dollars for a haircut, twenty-five for a color, thirty for highlights, thirty-five for perms, and five dollars for me to wax your eyebrows or lip. I charge a little bit less than some salons here in my town but overall, that is the average.

I hope this helps and I hope you decide to do something else. This business is not as easy as you think it would be.
