Could be strep, could be mumps, only a doctor can tell for sure.
Do you have little white "sacks" all over your tonsils, adenoids or the back of your throat? If yes, those are the infection and the doc will do a strep test to tell for sure.
If your throat is just really red, but no "sacks" and you are not running a high fever, I would just take some pain meds (ibuprophen, tylenol) drink lots of warm fluids, and gargle with salt water. Chloraseptic also works great.
If you are running a high fever and feel miserable all over, go see your doc straight away. It it is strep, you have to take antibiotics to cure it, and strep can damage your organs if not taken care of.

These along with puss pockets at the back of your throat are all symptoms of strep throat. I would suggest getting to a doctor soon so that maybe you can catch it before it becomes a lot worse.

You really do need to see a doctor. Have someone look down your throat. Strep usually causes white spots. Sounds serious.

It could be lots of things, but it is important to have it checked out!
My daughter had strep that went undiagnosed (because she didn't have any symptoms). This continued to manifest as something called Sydenhams Chorea. Chorea causes, among other things, vegetation to grow on heart valves so it sounds and acts like a heart murmur.
She is on low dose penicillin for life to reduce this growth.

Sounds like you may have tonsillitis or glandular fever, you could see your doctor but when i last had tonsillitis the doc said that it would be best to heal on its own ... You could try something from the chemists like soothers or ask the chemist
