I'm a teacher and I'm being short with my students. The little things that normally don't bother me are really getting on my nerves. I need a good way to deal with this so I can stop taking it out on my students.

Oooh this rings very familiar to me. I'm also a teacher and I had exactly the same thing going on as you.

You are in burnout. You need to address this by only doing what is absolutely what is necessary. (In the past I used to say but it's ALL gotta be done, there's nothing I can cut out), believe me you must cut something down somewhere.

When you are not in school you need to try to rebalance things by creating 'me' times where you indulge yourself in little luxuries.
What ever you find relaxing.

If you can imagine a set of balance scales and one one side is all your stress weighing the scales down in that direction, then the other side needs stuff on to to make things balance...good stuff.
Arrange good stuff in your diary and stick to it. Also, taking bad stuff off the other side will help the scales to balance too.

6 months after this was happening to me I had a breakdown. My dad died and that completed it....On top of all the stress I was encountering at work, I was unable to go on.

You see, if you go back to imagining how the scales are for you right now, tipped in one direction, you can see that if anything else stressful comes along then things pile up more on that side and the whole thing collapses.

Don't forget that Christmas is coming too, that can be a stressful time of year at home and at work.

Pace yourself and 'walk slowly through each day'

Best wishes.

Take a walk! Put on your headphones or go to a local park (or beach if you have one - running water is great for relieving stress) and just walk until you feel calm. Not only is it a great way to blow off some steam, it's a good way to lose some of those extra pounds we all seem to have.
