I live in North America and can not get enough of British TV simply because of the language they speak. It sounds so proper, not agressive. Such a turn on. Why in America we had to destroy it so much?

Just as Americans love British English, Many Brits love to hear the American dialect because it's different than what they speak. Americans DO have an accent, and it varies by geographical area just like in England. Someone from the Lake District isn't going to sound like someone in London ... just like someone from Boston isn't going to sound like someone from Texas ...

Also, based on geography, the dialect changed with the influx of new immigrants into the USA after our independance from England. The East coast has alot of mixed European dialects mixed in with "English" and the south has alot of "Spanish/French" mixed in with English.

But yes, British accents are Hot, and Scottish accents are even hotter ... just look at Ewan Mcgreggor ;)

Proper British English is wonderful but remember when you are over there it is only spoken by the educated. There is also a lower class slang that is similar to how Americans trash the language.

I am not sure where the accent went but perhaps it is a result of so many people from different countries learning English and then infusing their own accents on the language. Eventually, the original sounds and cadence are lost replaced by a more generic form.

tee hee, I'm a Brit and had a boyfriend in NY some years ago, I do speak "quite nicely" and all his friends would go crazy for the way I speak. I have a male friend who speaks in quite a posh accent (think Giles from Buffy) and he's always a hit with foreigners too, but not at ALL with UK women.

But there are LOTS of accents all over the UK, some are quite unintelligible and lots of people think some are really ugly, but then people from those areas probably hate other accents!

Some old people can be really amusing about strong regional accents, if you have to emulate one accent from one village they might criticise and say you sound like you are more from the next village over. I have actor friends who say this often.

I love lots of accents, from all over the world, and I always love being told I have a sexy accent too.

I don't think the Americans have destroyed the accent, it is just really different all over and beautiful. I LOVE the accents of the Deep South, white and black alike.

i'm afraid to assert which you for sure have not any thought what you're speaking approximately. Your assertion is in basic terms too popular. you could't hear to 3 brits who talk cockney and make a sweeping assertion like "Brits talk English so horribly". That being reported, i think of that's genuine to a definite quantity that community audio gadget of any language tend to no longer positioned too plenty emphasis on the correctness of their grammar and language. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, that's not unavoidably a foul subject the two, because it ends up in evolution of a language to alter into greater versatile and vibrant. different than for that, in case you're speaking approximately pronunciation, English human beings usually have very stable pronunciation, as do the human beings. the only distinction is that the English talk Brittish English and the human beings talk American English. i do no longer see how one would properly be worse than the different.

I simply love British English, it is so distinctive and I like the particular accents. Nice question, almost astonished that an US citizen is talking about the British sounding and adequacy.
Take care.
Have a great time!

That's only the TV. If you are in London or other parts of UK and hear the locals or their soccer stars speak, you'll probably end up wondering which part of the world actually came up with the Queen's English accent which we are so familiar with.
