It's a scam.

The $4,600 check is going to be returned. You never should have deposited it because it is counterfeit and the police might think you are part of the whole scheme.

Obviously, don't send them a penny and don't respond to any more of their e-mails.

You need to contact your bank immediately. Until recently I was a bank teller and saw scams like this all the time. The check will bounce, which is why they want you to send them money now. If you are not careful you will be held liable by your bank to pay back the $4600, plus you could also be arrested for fraud.

I'm surprised your bank even took the check. Most tellers are trained to recognize such items. You need to get this taken care of asap, or it can ruin your life.

Do not do nothing. Do not even spend the money. That check will eventually bounce. Your bank is obligated to cash the check after certain amount of time, even if they have not been able to verify it. Once it is properly verified it will bounce, and you will be responsible for the money. So do not even spend the money unless you want to pay it back. This is a common scam. They want you to send half, they get 2,300 from you, and when it bounces you get 0 (actually you lost 2,300).
