I'm traveling to Bangkok in December. I don't plan to do much sightseeing, as I am actually having surgery. I want to know how to dress without getting in serious trouble. I was considering wearing a skirt, especially on the plane (24 hours of flying) because I don't think I'd feel comfortable wearing jeans for that long.

It's short, but I don't know if I'd describe it as mini. It's maybe about 4 inches above my knee (mostly because I happen to be very tall). Would this be ok without horribly offending people to just go through the airport, maybe go get take out or other food shopping while I recover, etc?

Your skirt will be fine as long as your are not visiting the temples which you can not enter showing your shoulders or legs. I was in Thailand on vacation and did fine with skirts.

Well there are short skirts and then there are really short skirts! If you are modest then you can get away with it except for temples and official places. If you get in trouble and have to go to government office better dress like a nun. If you dress too slutty you may be taken for a hooker that came over from one of the former Soviet Union states. At least this is one way you can pick up some quick cash. Ordinary shorts are okay as long as they are not Daisy Dukes! Keep a lightweight wrap around skirt in your walkabout bag for those instances where a little more modesty may be required or prudent. Happy trails.

I think it would be ok to wear a mini skirt in Bangkok. I've been there once and I don't think they mind.
What kind of surgery did you undergo?

thai women dress very conservatively. A 20 hour flight is a long time to keep your legs from spreading. If you go through bangkok with a miniskirt they will probably think you are (if European) a russian prostitute

You will be alright in that dress anywhere in Bangkok, except if you have to visit a temple. Proper dress for temple visit is a dress that covers below the knees. So a wrap-around would suffice.

Anywhere else, your dressing is acceptable.

Well, if the object is comfort, then I usually fly in a pair of sweat pants and a sweatshirt.. it can get very chilly on the plane.. If the object is to show off your long legs, then go for it, but it sounds like uncomfortable airplane attire.. Most Thais are pretty conservative and you should dress appropriately for your age, whatever that might be..
