You do need a visa but I was a bit naughty when I was there and actually applied for a tax number even though I didn't have a visa. The tax office looks at your passport to check all your papers are in order and then they issue you a tax number. I thought I'd try my luck and showed them my visa-less passport thinking if I don't get one then no worries I won't work, however, they did give me a tax number!! Think they were glad I was going to pay tax rather than not pay at all!! I was only on a tourist visa though so could only stay 6 months as opposed to the year if I had the visa.
Hope this helps

Yes, you will, but if you are under 27, you may be eligible for a visa which allows you to travel and work, called a working hoiday visa.
