Radio Shack has a worldwide recycling program at all of their stores. They will recycle any battery that they sell.

you can throw them out, meaning in the trash, but it will be more nature friendly to take them to the recycle place. The planet you live on, and can't escape from is being exploited so much now that it is getting ready to deal the human a blow that will change the way things are. And don't be fooled, the blow will be so powerful that many will pray for death. Recycle all that you can and do your part. Were it not for nature you wouldn't have batteries to begin with to enjoy your Ipod, or CD, or Mp3, or or or. Hell, even things that need batteries come from nature.

Make a hole in the wall in one of the rooms in your house, and drop your dead batteries in there. That way, in a hundred and eleven years, when they come and knock down your house they can worry about what to do with the batteries.
Be sure to hang a picture or something over the hole.

if it was for cars,make a hole in the ground of your garden, the hole should have .5-.6 meter(depth) and diameter that enough for your battery then bury it for half an hour, then use it a gain. I AM NOT JOKING.
because the earth has the biggest amount of electric charges.

Some office supply stores offer recycling, and you can drop them off in a bin there. The link in the source will let you look for a local place to recycle them (US/Can only)
