My mom told me to warm some olive oil in a bag under a stream of hot water, massage it in my hair, and wrap in a towel for softer hair.

How much oil should I use (my hair is thick, natural African-American hair past my shoulder blades) and how long should I keep it wrapped. Also, after this I shampoo my hair...would it be overkill to use a commercial conditioner after the shampoo? rinse-out conditioner of course.

thanks!

I use hot oil treatments on my hair 1 a week. I switch oils between carrot, olive, jojoba, and almond. just use approx. 2 tbsp. on hair to coat.
Here is a conditioning recipe that works good to lock in moisture especially with the winter coming up.

Honey Conditioning Treatment
Mix 1/2 Pure Honey with 1/4 cup olive oil . Use 2
tablespoons for normal to oily hair. Using a small amount at a time, work mixture through hair until coated. Cover hair with a shower cap and leave on 30 minutes. Shampoo well and rinse; dry as usual.

I do this to my hair every 2 weeks & it works! Use enough olive oil to saturate ALL of your hair, then wrap it in a towel for 30 minutes. After you wash it out you will instantly notice that your hair is softer and easier to mannage! No dont use a conditioner afterwords, just put in a leave-in moisturizer.

This is a great cosmetic fix. I say cosmetic because it will not actually reconstruct the hair or do anything other than being a temporary fix but it sure won't hurt! Use enough oil to saturate without it dripping.........you're not a salad! Keep it wrapped for 15-20 minutes. You can use a traditional conditioner after but it's not necessary. I would recommend a product line called Aphogee or Mizani for your daily cleansing and conditioning needs. Also, Aphogee makes a GREAT reconstructor to be used in the same manner that we are discussing the olive oil treatments. It smells like dirty, nasty feet (Gee that sounds so professional) but it works wonders and will actually fix damaged hair.
