The best gift you can give to a teacher is a thank you note telling him/her what an impact they have made on your life...what they have taught you and how it will help you in life. Teachers want to know that their hard work and effort has touched your life. Teachers also feel as if you are one of their own children. They pray for you, wonder what you will be when you grow up, etc.
Keep in touch with your teachers....stay in their lives and let them know what you are doing. Another great gift with the letter could be a picture of you in a small frame.

You said he is a teacher, from England, and wants to be a writer. England's most famous living writer J.K. Rowling has a teacher named Dumbledore in her Harry Potter books. (one or two people have read these books) Dumbledore once said he wanted wool socks for Christmas because everyone always gave him books. Give him some socks with a note that says "Merry Christmas Professor Dumbledore".

A gift card to someplace (Walmart, Office Depot, Target, a local classroom supply store, etc....). Too many teacher's, across the country, have to spend their own money on classroom supplies that this would be a great gift!

I would choose a useable little container, such as Rubbermaid, and fill it up with things she can use in her classroom. Stickers, award notepads, pencils, sticky notes, etc. They do use a lot of their own money on the little things.
Stick something just for her in it too, a box of chocolates or package of candy.

As a teacher myself, I can honestly say having somebody care enough to bring a present is enough :) It's all in the thought for me!
