In order for it to be of interest to a good number of people including administration, one could speak with the area Chamber of Commerce and ask them what if anything is planned in the community for the upcoming holiday season...parades, charity events, etc... Of course, most schools have homecoming football events at this time of year. Has a schedule been included in any of the papers? Speak with the sponsors of the various clubs to learn what projects they have planned and write about that.
One rule of thumb to remember about reporting...if you go to two different places and hear people around you speaking of the same subject or topic...it is worth writing about.
Discipline is another topic which is often unmentioned in school publications. Speak with the Principal to determine if any common problems exist at the school and what (if anything) is planned to curb the behaviors. Using the link below, write an article about the "types" of misbehaviors listed...students, as well as, faculty should get a kick out of it. There are 117 of them...so it should be an ongoing source of writing material...
See an excerpt below:
Featured behavior:
The Petty Rules Breaker
Behavior: Specific attitudes and actions of this child at home and/or at school.
Continually disobeys school and class rules.
Chews gum or eats candy in class.
Wears coat, hat, or some other inappropriate apparel in class.
Argues hat other teachers allow this behavior.
Offends more by frequency than by seriousness.
Uses the excuse "I forgot" continuously.
May think he/she is clever in getting by with breaking a rule.

Write about the current events that are going on. The good thing is that there is always something happening. Go talk to some club members see what they've been doing, And don't leave out the little clubs. Your best story may be what the chess team is up too.

Find a recent grad from your school who went into the military. See if you can get their contact info and interview them. The easiest way to get it would be to contact his/her parents if they still live in town. Your school guidance office or local recruiter should be able to help you if you don't know anyone. Also see if they can send you some photos that you can use in your article.

What do I want to know?
1. How difficult is it to get on the school paper if I'm shy....and I don't know how to get on the school paper staff, but I always wanted to.
2. What is the biggest problem that your peers have that is difficult to discuss, so you're opening up their eyes about it?
.....The most difficult for me is to understand why my 16 year old daughter is cutting/slashing/self-mutilating herself....and
.........this is really what I can't understand?
