I got a knock at the door and it was a churchgoer proselytizing her religion in the neighborhood. They've always made me queasy. Being a Witch, it's difficult for me to talk about religion with people who think I am evil and need to be saved.
Anyway, she asked me what church I go to and I told her that I'm a Witch, and I was prepared for the glare and the finger-shaking, and the "I'll pray for you" speech. But instead, she asked what Witchcraft is like! So I told her a few things about it. And then instead of condemning me, she said that she was glad that I've found spiritual fulfillment!
What a nice lady! Why can't more people be like this?

She offered you kindness you received it gladly and in exchange you returned the same back to her. The world can use a whole lot more of this!

That's great! I know this is going to sound odd, but for the last two decades my experiences with door-to-door proselytizers have been the same. Perhaps it depends on where one lives. Maybe I've just always been lucky. Once, the man was so friendly and non-judgmental that I agreed to visit one of their services (but only after he knew that I have no intention of changing religions). It was a friendly group of people and it was very interesting. Not once did anyone pressure me in anyway. I learned a lot about their path. It's been so long since I have had one of the obnoxious door-knockers that it would be a shock to get one now. Darn---now I've probably jinxed myself!
Seriously, the ones around here are very nice.

While this is a nice story and all, I have to wonder. If that's all she was going to do, why did she bother going out at all? I guess this sounds a little jaded, but it doesn't seems like people would do this without wanting to get something out of it. I mean, even if it was just to maybe make plans to talk about your different beliefs some time over coffee.
I wonder if it was just very clear that you have strong beliefs and wouldn't convert. In that case, she could see proselytizing wouldn't go anywhere and she diverted the conversation to something else. If this were the case, it'd still be nice... just not as innocent.

This is how all religious exchanges should go - an exchange of ideas with no goals of conversion in mind. imo, i truly do admire wicca even though i am christian - i admire that they generally don't try to convert others and that they practice their religion peacefully. I, too, am glad you are involved in such an honourable religion and that you clearly exemplify the positive stereotype i've acquired for your religion.

Wow. I'm just stunned. Good for her! I know exactly how you feel. It makes me so tense when I encounter "truly religious" people who turn around and insist that I've sold my soul to Satan and that Witchcraft is the surest path to hell. It's so nice to know that occassionally they send a NICE person out to talk to the masses about Christianity!

Hahah! I love that story! Thanks for sharing it. That's so great.
As an atheist, I usually make the door-to-door people a little jittery. I always try to do something kind. Give them a snack. I gave one old JW lady a pair of gloves. They haven't responded as kindly as this woman did to you tho. Good for her! (And you! You obviously were pretty friendly in your approach or she wouldn't have been so positive)

That's great! I agree, why don't more people react like that? It's a bit odd, since she was obviously there to push her religion, but still, that's great.

Have a great day.
