I drive thousands of miles every year in France, and in my experience there is not an abundance of hotels which are actually on the motorway or situated in service stations.
If you are looking for a completely no-frills and cheap place to stay, then try the Formule 1 'hotels'. They are usually situated in either retail parks or industrial estates in or near every major town and city in France. They are signposted from the motorways too. They are prefab buildings and all the rooms are identical: 1 double bed with 1 single bunk above it, a TV and a sink with a hand towel supplied. The toilets and showers are shared by all but there are plenty of them. All in all, they are mainly clean and characterless but a cheap place to bed down for the night. Breakfast is buffet style continental (no croissants though!) and again is very cheap.
In a similar vein, also check out: Premiere Classe, B&B, Villages, and any others in the 'Accor' hotel chain.

When asking about traveling through France, it is usually a smart idea to put the question in the France section rather than the UK section. If you are British I am sure it was a mistake, if not- YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

When me and my family travel across France we tend to stay in Campanile and Ibis hotels, because these are cheap and plentiful. But be warned, the quality changes dramatically, some are excellent and some are disgusting. Ibis is the best of the two chains.
