It appears to be a software problem which other XP users have, where blank discs are not recognised by Windows Media player nor can I access discs unless burnt on an older machine.
I had the same problem on that, except I could burn discs with Nero

try this registry fix to disable the XP Burner and then use Nero to burn the disks.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
Modify/Create the Value Name [NoCDBurning] according to the Value Data listed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: NoCDBurning
Value Data: [0 - Enable Burning / 1 - Disable Burning]
Exit Registry and Reboot

I'd just buy a new one. They've come down quite a bit in the last few years. You should be able to get a CD RW Drive from wa-mart for 20.00
