I have been quite ill for some time with problems with my gallbladder and Iam not unable to eat very little if at all. I asked my GP to refer me to a consultant privately and although Iam getting worse have been hoping I would see the consultant who would put me forward for gallbladder surgery asap. I now found out today that my GP surgery hadnt even bothered to send the consultant a letter asking for the appointment. I just feel like crying. Any advice

If you can avoid it DON'T have your gallbladder removed - you will have a 16% increase in the chance of developing Bowel Cancer! I had my gallbladder removed on 6th October 1997, the week before I had a Barium X-Ray of my bowels. They were perfect! On 6th June 2002 I had surgery for removal of a tumour from my colon and it was malignant! I had 6 months chemo. On 13th September 2005 a scan showed the bowel cancer cells had spread to both my lungs and my liver. I started chemo again in November last year for 7 months, have had a break and now started again for another 6 months. There are other ways of getting rid of gallstones - it would be worth you paying for a private consultation with a gallbladder specialist and a scan - to save time and get treatment. Are you in pain all the time? Is your pain between your ribs and does it ease off when you stand up? How does the doctor know it's your gallbladder? If what you say is right, perhaps you need to be more assertive and just tell him how you feel. I think that's appalling treatment.

Really it's hard to tell if it's incompetence or overworked doctor or what. But I can understand your frustration. When you are ill and fatigued, it's almost impossible to do the follow-up you need to do with the people who are supposed to be helping you get better. Everything is an effort. Life sucks.

I would like to suggest that you do something that makes you feel comforted. Here are some suggestions:
* A massage
* Ask a best friend to just listen while you cry
* Something that makes you laugh out loud -- perhaps a humorous movie. When I was ill, I loved listening to PG Wodehouse and his Jeeves stories.
* Start a small project that forces you to sit and rest at the same time. You'll feel accomplished when it's finished and still getting rest. For me, this was crocheting.
* Get a tape that helps you with imaging. There are some good tapes (or CDs) that are self-hypnosis and will make you feel good just by listening to them. It has the added benefit of forcing you to stop and take it easy.
* Start some sort of regular exercise. Again, nothing fancy or that needs equipment. It can be as simple as marching in place for 2 minutes followed by 2 minutes of stretching. Again it's to force you to get order into your life so you don't feel as helpless.

Some GP surgeries send all their referrals etc., once a week, so maybe it has been delayed like that. Your next option if it has been forgotten is to ask to see the Practice Manager and express your concerns with he/she. It is their job to sort this kind of thing out and they will speak to the Doctor about it. Good luck.

Have a serious moan at the doctors surgery, this is incompetence. Tell them you want them to arrange you an appointment ASAP otherwise you will take the complaint to the Family Practioner Commitee.

Go and see your doctor first and ask why you were not referred. If you are not satisfied, there will be a complaints procedure at the surgery. Go and see the receptionist and ask for the relevant forms.
