Well ... It is not that the golf balls "lose" distance. (There is a small decrease over several years - i.e. 5 years may result in a loss of 2-3yrds if tested on a machine)
The difference results from the technology - the poster above is using balatta balls from twenty years ago. They might appear normal to him, but when compared to new ball technology of today (which has changed dramatically in 20 years) he is probably costing himself *at least* a couple yards.
Most of all, your swing, swing speed and where you hit the ball on the club face has the most impact on distance - of any ball, new, used or old.
The pros can take the latest technology and pickup 2-3 yards with the latest ProVs for example. However the common amateur usually cant produce the swing speed to even see a 1/2 yard difference.

Modern golf balls retain their qualities (distance, spin, shape) for a very long time. You will most likely cut, loose or wear the dimples off a ball before it looses it's distance quality.

Lost in distance will not be noticeable.
I worry more on the roll.
Even new ball being kept too long in storage, cover of the 3 piece (and some 2 piece) balls may looses its integrity.
Hence affecting the roll.

Recently, while cleaning out storage, I found a dozen new Titleist ballata balls that I received as a Christmas present in 1986. I have been playing with them and notice no loss in distance.
