No it's not pointless.Whether your burning fat, glycogen or blood glucose you're still burning calories.A new study has shown that drinking 17 ounces of water before a work out can increase your metabolism by 30%.I even have a copy of this study in my files but you'll have to take my word for it.If you're doing weight training and cardio the weight training always comes first. That way you've depleted your glycogen and are more likely to burn fat.
It is always better to eat afterwords.Everyone will tell you to fuel up first. That is in fact dead wrong. When you eat before you work out you do not fuel your muscle.Muscles work off of glycogen(stored carbohydrate) and other macronutrients once converted to glucose through gluconeogenisis or ketosis. These nutrients are transported to the mitochondria of the cells by insulin.
By raising your blood glucose right before a work out(eating anything will do this to some degree but carbs are the worst) you're more likely to secrete insulin to control your blood sugar. This will mitigate the secretion of many beneficial androgens and growth factors(not just needed for bigger muscles).
Conversely, eating a good meal or meal replacement shake after is more likely to replace glycogen stores and shunt nutrients away from fat cells(adipose tissue).Always work out on an empty stomach.Carbing up should be done the day before.Glycogen is not stored instantaneously. It takes time.
You will NOT burn off the calories that you've just ingested.
Here's a Yahoo! link that will dispel much of the nonsense you may hear.

Working out burns up excess blood sugar which can turn into fat if it is not burned up. Working out is always good even if you can't do it at an optimum time. I have read that a good way to lose weight is to work out in the evening after dinner and then again in the morning before breakfast because it burns up all that excess blood sugar.

Don't enter exercise hungry!
You should eat before and after exercise to maintain a healthy body. Take high fiber foods about 2 or 3 hours before getting exercise. Oat, bread, juice, pasta, fruit like banana or energy bar are among the good foods you can eat before exercise.
Don't starve yourself. An empty stomach means your glucose level in the blood is decrease. To prevent this, don't starving yourself. Eat something but in a small portion. It's enough!

You have to eat BEFORE you work out. Some people like to work out on an empty stomach but it's an energy drainer IMO. Have a small meal or snack 45 minutes-1 hour before you work out like a piece of fruit. Don't forget to healthy carbs AFTER you work out also!

who the heck told you not to eat first? You should eat before so you have more energy to work out with. I eat before I work out and it's only been 2 weeks and I've lost 7 pounds :) My gym trainer told me I must eat about 1-2 hours before not any longer or I can't produce the results I want

It is much better to actually work out, when you can, than to miss working out completely. No one has an ideal workout schedule... do the best you can and you will still make gains.

I brush my tooth after. Sometimes I do it earlier than and after. Brushing your tooth earlier than is senseless on account that for those who do this, you'll be able to simply get our tooth soiled from you simply brushing your tooth.
