Of course. Last names are common and even if by some chance you are distantly related that would not be prohibited. The law prohibits only close relations from marrying for the simple and logical reason that birth defects occur in much higher numbers when inbreeding occurs. So it prohibits mother/father-son/daughter marriages, sister-brother marriages, and marriages to first cousins in some places. For example in the US first cousin marriages are prohibited, but in England they are not.
So unless you are closely related with the same last name, its not a problem, genetically or legally.

I hope it is alright since I dated someone with the same last name once (not related). However my grandmother always said that same name relationships wont work out. I guess she was right since it only lasted 6 months.

Why would it be inappropriate? Sharing the same last name, but not immediate family means you are not related, therefore go for it....ALSO...it has been medically proven that producing children with family members such AS cousins are no more likely to have children with birth defects. I'm not saying that it's socially acceptable, but if you were distantly related, it would not make a difference!

I don't see why not if you guys are not related, the good thing about it is if you guys plan on marring some day (she does not have to change her last name)

Of course. Just make sure about the fact that you're not related.

Totally. Then if you stay together you don't have to worry about her wanting to keep her last name or thinking her name sounds stupid with your last name.
It's actually a pretty good solution, though you might get some crap for it

If you are sure there is no relation, there is nothing wrong. If you end up getting married, there's less paperwork. All that matters is if you like her and she likes you.

Yes as long as you know for sure that you are not related.
