I bought a dvd/vhs combo to connect to my tv/vhs combo. My plan was to play to vhs in the tv combo while recording it to dvd in the dvd/vhs combo. My son says he doesnt think this will work and/or it will have poor quality. What do you think? Does anyone know of store nationwide (such as circuit city, etc) that might do that kind of thing...transferring vhs to dvd?

Yes, what you describe should work exactly as it does for making a tape copy, but the DVD will be only as good as the tape. It won't get any better. If the tape looks bad, then so will the DVD. Use high quality cables to connect the audio and video, not the antenna connections. Your son is right on one thing, if you use the antenna connections on 2 VCR's, it does degrade the quality of the copy more than using the audio and video inputs and outputs.

I seem to remember seeing this service offered at my local Rite-Aid.

Here's a source on the web. I have used this company in the past. Their web address is www.jettvideotransfer.com. Jett Video Transfer . The main issue when transferring vhs tapes to dvd is having the video and audio in sync. Most combo units will have the audio and video out of sync just enough to notice a delay. The company mentioned above actually improved my video quality.

my process is somewhat long and probably annoying.. =)..

get a video input card for your computer.. hook up the VCR to the video input card and connect sound to audio in using a RCA to the stereo jack cable.. then play and record.. then when its done recording.. use a software to burn the recorded file to a dvd.. burning the dvd will take sometime to process and render and burn... if you have the patience then okay..

WELL TO BE HONEST, DON'T TELL THEM THAT IS WHAT YOUR PLANNING TO DO,.LEGALLY IN ALL, HOWEVER IT IS POSSIBLE I WOULD GO ONLINE TO SEARCH THAT, LONG AS YOUR NOT RE-SELLING ANYTHING OR SHOWING IT YOU SHOULD BE OKAY.

REMEMBER CERTAIN LEGAL GUIDE LINES, DEPENDING WHERE YOU ARE IN THE WORLD YOU CAN GET IN TROUBLE FOR IT.

I DON'T RECOMEND DO SO
