I have heard that you can judge a man's character by how he treats his mother? Is this saying true?
My current boyfriend of four years is really horrible to his mother cursing at her, pushing, stealing, and not being grateful for everything she does.

that is so sad. that is just very cruel and rude to treat the lady who gave birth to him with such low respect. i dont want to get into the whole issue of someone needing counseling but i would have to say that if treats his own mother so rudely that he will never be a kind and trusting man. and even stealing from her. that is horrible. i dont know the situation but it seems like maybe he is an only child or had something traumatic happen at an early age and his mother is babying him. and if his father is still around it is also his fault for putting up with that behavior. i grew up when it was still acceptable and not considered child abuse for a parent to take a belt or paddle and whip you good for that kind of behavior. i think child abuse is very wrong but some children need to learn that there is a reaction to every action. and if there actions are bad they will suffer the consequences. i never had to go through those beatings often with my parents. i seen it happen to my brothers and knew what would happen if i misbehaved. my mom did paddle me once so hard it broke it and i didnt shed a tear. she knew after that it was useless to be violent with me. it happenned over eating an extra poptart for breakfast. how foolish to hit me for that. my father was a barber and used to have one of those big razor straps. after seeing my older brother get that i got the hint to just do what they say. wow that was long winded and boring. and i havent even got to my stepdad yet. im sorry to say it but i truly believe if he treats his own mother so badly that you are headed towards a life of abuse and dissapointment. im sure you must love him greatly but you are still young and need to be wise and make the right choices now. dont waste 20 more years just to get used and abused. my sister still regrets all the years she supported her worthless boyfriend who abused her constantly. when he wasnt back in prison again. please do yourself a favor and move on. you said you are in college. find a nice kind guy that wants to have a decent life and not sponge off you and be a burden to society. i know that may seem cruel of me because i am sure you must love youre boyfriend deeply. but if he really loved you also he would get a job and quit stealing. i dont know how much if any drug use is into play here but my sister took a felony to stash her boyfriends coke. do you think he tried to bail her out?

You can judge a man by the way they treat any person!
If a man treats people in general poorly - it's a problem.
If a man treats a family member or someone else that he is supposed to love and respect poorly - he isn't a man!

As far as I know, you can judge ME by how I treat YOU. As a friend, or even more, IF you'd ever want. But as far as how I treat my mom,aka my grandmother- well, it's really hard to tell from our relation ship(me and her), because she is going senile, and doesn't understand that she is kinda pissing me off on purpose. I do know that she loves me, and I love her, we just don't get along very well. Yes, I DO yell at her sometimes, but that's only when she is not in her right mind, and I have to get her back in reality. With others, I don't have that problem.

before being married a mother is the most important woman in a man's world so if you cant treat her right then what makes you think you can treat the next importnat woman any better. on the other side moms can be a pain in the *** so look at the mom first before you can judge

Yes, it's true in most cases. Your boyfriend has a dysfunctional relationship with his mother. This indicates he does not related to women normally. Over time, he will treat you as badly as he treats his mother.

He sounds like a misogynists, in the making. You should reconsider a long term relationship, unless you have a poor self-image and crave abuse.

Definitely, because in most cases a guy's mom is the first adult woman he will be in contact with most during his formative years. So his attitude towards his mother will usually be a fairly good indicator of his attitude towards the opposite sex, in general. If you ever hear a guy talking about hitting or fighting with his mom growing up, beware.

Yes, it has a lot to do. I'm pretty sure you love this guy, otherwise you wouldn't be with him .. but, he'll never change. Would you really like to be treated that way ??? I know it easier to say it, but: Leave him! At the end, you'll be the only one hurt.

The way you describe your BF is a what I'd call a jerk.......and you're still with him. How long before her treats you that same way......or maybe he already is.
He doesn't respect his Mom, he'll never truly respect you.

it is often a goos starting point on judging a man, his mother would have been his first serious relationship with a female, so often this is used as a subconcious 'template' for future relationships. there is allways exceptions though.
