I would suggest a short note. Perhaps a greeting card. Go to the friendship section of any Hallmark store. Or the Thank you section if what you want is to express gratitude.
Be brief and speak from your heart. This is what will make it special. Not something someone else tells you. A letter is an "I love you" manifested in material form, so be you.
One of the best gifts I ever received was a hand written note that said simply, "I thank god for putting you in my life. I thank you for receiving me. Know that you are well loved."
